We all hope that you had a very good Christmas and/or holiday season, and a very Happy New year. We thank
each and everyone who sent donations and Christmas gifts to Roseland Cemetery Volunteers Assoc., Inc. We
appreciate your special gifts and contributions to Roseland very much. They will help tremendously in forwarding the
work on the cemetery and keeping it up.
We want to thank the family of Mary Rienhold (Who was buried at Roseland in the fall) for your request to send
contributions to Roseland Cemetery Volunteers Assoc. in lieu of flowers. Many people sent gifts in lieu of flowers,
and these will help greatly in restoring the cemetery.
We now have another timber Co. that will cut the trees off of the back of the cemetery for us, but then we had run
into more beaurocricy which we had to go through before we can get that done ! The city of Atlanta has made a new
law to save green space, and would fine us if we cut any trees over 6 inches in diameter, even if they are growing up
in the middle of the graves ! It is sad that when we could finally get something done, the city of Atlanta said that we
couldn't, and that has delayed us very much! Bill met with a city Arborist at the cemetery several weeks ago and
hiked all over the back of the cemetery with him. The arborist agreed that the trees needed to come down, and said
that he would go to bat for us on our appeal to the city tree committee.
Therefore, on Wednesday, March 26th Bill and Gwen went to a meeting before the Atlanta Tree Commission to get
this ordinance waived for the cemetery so that we can get it all cleaned off, and testified before the commission on
trees. We carried many news articles about Roseland, and many pictures we took showing the bad state that the
back part is in, and after much testimony and discussion, they voted to let us clear off the cemetery without fining us
for cutting down the trees. HALLELUYAH ! Now hopefully the back will be cleared off and cleaned up soon.
During the winter while the grass and trees were dormant, with much help we got more of the scrubby brush cut
down toward the back, got the large stumps ground down, and cut down the old dead tree on the west side. We
also cut down all of the old overgrown Crepe Myrtle trees on the west side-road so that they can grow back up into
pretty bushes again.
Last Friday (April 4th), with the help of Ray Salter and Mark Wilkins, and a faithful day-worker, Amos Stiggers, we
got the tombstones and graves weed-eated around and the grass cut, all the way from the street to almost all the way
up the hill. However, there is much more to be done up over the hill and back to where the trees haven't been cut
down yet; Privet hedge, briars and vines, and trees are growing back up from the roots, and Thistles seem to be
growing everywhere! We will need everyone's help who has family buried there to fight these unwanted plants and
keep them from taking over the cemetery again.
Yes, it's Spring again, folks, and the weeds and vines are beginning to grow, and some trees that have been cut are
sprouting up from the roots. - And we need all the help that we can get!
So if you are able, please come to Roseland and help; - cut some grass, cut down weeds & vines, or spray
weed-killer on the Poison Ivy & other vagabond weeds that are growing up this spring. You can bring some
Fire-ant killer and put on the fire-ant hills. You can even bring just some Clorox and pour on the little Mimosa trees
that are coming back up from the roots (We have been told that it will kill them). Bring a flat hoe or an edger, and
hoe or edge around the flat tombstones that grass is growing over. - Or just come and pull up some weeds, or pick
up sticks & limbs, or trash off the cemetery grounds. - ANY of these things that you can do will help greatly, and will
really help to make and keep the cemetery more clean and beautiful.
